We used a "Coach" to help DD polish her application essays because she was much more amenable to recommendations from a "professional" than her own parents. Other members of our family had recommended Potomac Writers http://www.potomacwriters.com because they were really happy with the service. We thought it was a truly worthwhile investment as her essays were so much more powerful and moving after working with them. It also alleviated a ton of negative parent/teen interactions around the timing of finishing the essays and applications.

Exactly!
I think college coaches are good for people who are:
- lazy, and not willing to read / research the process together with their child
- disorganized, and need someone to keep the track of all the deadlines
- have anxiety or other mental issues that makes all the college application a nightmare for both, child and parent.
- I can’t think of any other reason why would anyone waste their money on college coach.
Otherwise, if you are a normal average person who can read English, you don’t need a coach.
Actually, I’m “a normal average person who can read English,” but my DC has certain learning challenges, so we hired a consultant to help us identify schools that would be a good fit for her. This isn’t always necessarily about a “lazy” parent or one with mental health issues. Parents hire consultants for any number of reasons, many times because they have a kid with atypical concerns, not because it’s about THEM. Your post is rude and only considers the issue from one perspective.
