The police won’t come for this.

umm no. Police don't do reports that occur on private property. Its handled by insurance.

What on earth? Why would you think that?

Because you call then and that is what they say.

Hit and run not exactly correct. It’s hit and fraud since they gave a false address and drivers license.

This person is correct, you can file an incident report but private property police won't handle.

They hit the car and then left the scene without providing the correct information. It stopped being a hit and run when they spoke to the person they hit, but there is an argument here that by providing the incorrect information on purpose it is the same as not stopping/giving information at all. Or that by providing an expired license they are driving illegally?

Then they produced a drivers license that I photographed. Not theirs and out of date. WWYD? Please could use your advice. Damage is $2000.

File a claim of uninsured motorist with your insurance.

Just know that when you go to sell the car/trade it in someday, it will come up on the Carfax as having been in an accident.

Many people don't know this, but you can file for a Diminished Value Insurance Claim with your insurance company to cover for reduced value of your car as a result of the accident

OP said they got the person’s plate. Does that make a difference? I had the same happen to me once and I took the info to the police. They tracked down the driver almost two years later and she was made to pay. But that happened on a public street.

Its still on private property, so no it doesnt make a difference. It wasn't a hit and run once they got out and spoke to each other.

She has plate info for the car, and the suspect gave her a fake ID, so it seems to me like it is a police matter after all. OP should definitely call to file a report anyway. Even if she is told no.

Probably illegals.

Immigration status aside -this is definitely a police matter since they provided a fake ID.

Illegal isn’t a noun.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/illegal For better or worse, Merriam-Webster disagrees.

Illegal isn’t a noun.

It is shorthand for illegal immigrants. Don't be obtuse

NP here. It's lazy.

Sorry, hit submit too soon. PP is not obtuse, but is calling you out on lazy language that doesn't serve any of us.

NP. I read them and I still think it makes sense to call the police.

Were there security cameras in the parking lot? If you parked near the store front, the store's camera may have picked up the side swipe.

Did you snap a picture of the damage on the other car....which would match the damage to your car presumably? Should be bumper scratches, paint missing, paint from your car on their bumper, etc on the offender's car?

What? This was a hit and run. Of course call the cops.

No it wasn't. She spoke to the other driver.

From the OP - "Their first reaction was to drive off"

That's still a hit an run - perhaps an attempted hit an run.
