Happy naming!
I'm a 1976 Laura, and have had no trouble with people mispronouncing my name. 99.9% of the time people get it right (LOR-ah; LAH-rah is spelled Lara). I love my name: it's strong and classic and not often heard.
Anna is great, too.
I'm a Laura too and growing up Lauren was SUPER popular and people constantly mixed up my name and called me Lauren. Eww.
And whomever said Ellen is an ugly name (you suck, lol), it's my mother's name and while it may sound harsher than a name ending in "a" or "y" it is a sophisticated name. The Ellens i've known however are baby boomers. So it's a less common name today and therefore could be a really great choice.
