“ Biomechanics and running

As far as biomechanics, men usually have longer legs than women do, meaning they have more room for muscle, as well as a longer stride length, said Dr. Miho Tanaka, an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery and director of the Women's Sports Medicine Program at Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Moreover, because women tend to have wider hips, their running stance is not as efficient as a man's is, Tanaka said.

"Muscles work efficiently when everything is in line," Tanaka said. "If your hips are very narrow, like a man's, then your quads are running straight from your hips, past your knees. It's in a straight line, so it's acting in the same direction that you're running."

For a runner with wider hips, however, the "muscles almost have to turn a corner, so to speak," Tanaka said. "It's not like the optimized function for the muscle."

This isn't to say that women with wide hips can't run, but it's one of the many factors that explain why women, on average, aren't as fast as men, she said.”
https://www.livescience.com/59289-why-men-run-faster-than-women.html

The article compares men and women but biomechanics can carry over with comparing women to women. If a 12 year old with skill hits puberty and doesn’t get particularly tall and has wide hips relative to her peers she will likely not be as fast as she once was in a relative sense. The player will not have lost any skill but may very well have lost some athleticism.

Kids who never developed technique skill and IQ CAN be passed by if puberty was particularly unkind relative to her peer group. The speed that could always be counted on is just no longer there and now is just average speed with average skill.

Other things that come along with puberty that can pile on is simple body fat.

This is just nonsense and often wishful thinking from B team player parents. A 12 year old kid does not get worse at 15. Puberty can be unkind but puberty does not discriminate and usually has a level of detrimental affect for ALL girls across the board. Average kids are just as prone to get big hips and even slower than are the standout 12 year old kids are. Skills tend not to diminish but athleticism can and that cannot be predicted.

What's this about? Plenty of great soccer players and sprinters with curvy hips out there...

Yup and for some it works out and others it doesn't. The narrative that puberty only negatively affects top younger players is bogus. Focus on that point and keep your triggered in check.

Not triggered here, just deeply puzzled. So, you weren't trying to say that development of bigger hips is detrimental to soccer ability? If not, why are you talking about hips at all?

Bigger hips doesn't generally make a kid faster. Are you arguing that it does?

I’m arguing that hip size is not related to speed or athleticism at all. You are the very first person I’ve ever encountered who made that claim. Just wondering where you pulled that claim from.

These girls are all very slender, slender hips.

Their thighs are muscular/bigger—so we’re mine as a soccer player. But- no girls on my very high level team had saddle bags or unusually large hips.

Sprinters and soccer players have bigger, more muscular thighs.

Sydney LeRoux was incredibly fast and I would consider her curvy. I have noticed as a general trend that short players are faster. Maybe a greater density of short muscles.

Those sprinters in the picture have narrow hips. When people say wide hips they mean wide relative to waist.

Puberty negatively affect some kids. Some gain a ton of weight and lose speed and athleticism. If the parents are overweight more likely this will happen.

Skill isn't lost to puberty but pure speed most certainly can be. The whole point is that in a relative sense the skilled 12 year old will NOT generally be overtaken because of puberty that all kids go through regardless of initial skill level. If a kid falls off it is most likely because they have lost more of step relative speaking than what they had at 12.

And the coaches there were:

Yes, and talked directly to head coaches and were invited back with "discounts". The camps range from 40-200 for single day camps only.

Too many think the coaches are doing the recruiting. The parent player needs to do 99% of the work.

It doesn't take thousands, or even a thousand. It takes a little time and work on the families part.

Discounts for camps are recruiting violations. FYI

There are exceptions

"D1: Discounts are allowed, as long as they are not based on athletic ability and are available to everyone. For example, D1 schools are allowed to offer “early bird” discounts to their ID camps. Anyone from a D1 school is NOT allowed to pay for an athlete to attend that school’s camp.

D2 & D3: Discounts are NOT allowed. Ever. Any student who has started ninth grade can not be offered a discount to an ID camp. Anyone from D2 or D3 school is NOT allowed to pay for an athlete to attend that school’s camp."

https://www.soccernation.com/college-recruiting-choosing-summer-id-camps/

So no, at D1 players cannot be offered a discount that does not apply to everyone else at the time it is offered.
