Some parents are horrified. The kids won't be freaking out. They'll be high school students in a new building.

I don't know what Howard County is like, but I agree with the PP who said it's unrealistic to contemplate large-scale busing in MoCo. It sounds like HoCo only changed one particular school zone, which is very different than implementing busing across the entirety of one of the largest school districts in the country. Remember about 5 years ago when the county considered changing the bell times - ultimately the constraint was the expense of adding more buses, which is why they punted and just pushed everyone's day back 25 minutes. The cost of funding transportation for some kind of lottery system across the county would be astronomical (and really inefficient.)

Also traffic is probably very different here from HoCo. We're on the very eastern end of the BCC district and before they built Silver Creek, the 5 miles to Westland took an hour-plus each way. That sucks for everyone, but especially the lower income families, which is why MCPS didn't prioritize SES equity when they decided on the school pairings for Silver Creek and Westland. Poor families benefit from neighborhood schools at least as much if not more than wealthier families who have greater means and flexibility in managing greater distances.

This boundary study hasn't even started yet. The Board of Education will determine the scope when it does. However, since Rachel Carson is in the Quince Orchard cluster, and Dufief is in the Wootton cluster, I really don't know why the Gaithersburg cluster would be involved.

Also, RCES is still subject to the MCPS wide study. RCES has been way overcrowded for years. It’s currently one of the most overcrowded. Dealing with that issue is long overdue.
