Yes, if your kid is an athletic freak, she can make a top D1 soccer team. For almost everyone reading this post, even the mom of the kid in the best girls club thread, this isn’t true. Your kid isn’t an athletic freak and, no, rec soccer is not going to cut it.

All better now?

Is your kid an Olympic level sprinter who plays soccer for fun? Yes? Then maybe she has a slim chance of being
recruited from rec soccer to UVA. This is what we're talking about.
Otherwise, no.

This is 100% true. My daughter has attended many soccer camps and just this past summer the UVA coach told them they did not need to play for the top teams to get a look. If you make it your business to contact the schools to let them know you are interested in playing for them, they will follow up. He also gave the example of a current player on his roster that played Rec. She contacted them, they saw her and gave her a chance.

Which one?

https://virginiasports.com/roster.aspx?path=wsoc

MICHAELA MORAN

CAM LEXOW

SIENA SANDRIDGE

MICHAELA MORAN - Basketball National U16 team player
CAM LEXOW - Gatorade Pennsylvania Soccer Player of the Year for 2018-2019 season, US Youth National Girls Best XI for 2015
SIENA SANDRIDGE - ECNL Connecticut FC club player

Are these Rec players? No.

Basketball is not soccer. She committed to play soccer at uva not basketball. So... there's that.
Gatorade Player of the year is awarded to HIGH SCHOOL players not club (ECNL/DA) players. OBVIOUSLY the UVA rostered girls needed to play somewhere. No club id for her.

My daughter played at UVA. She's now graduated. I could see Steve and Ron taking on some freak athlete who was not on an ECNL or DA team, but there would have to be a story there--like, she had been playing three sports in high school at her boarding school, MVP in all of them, is a state champion sprinter, is physically dominant and has a first touch that is unbelievably soft. That kid might exist every two decades. Other than that, I doubt that they'd have much interest in any player who is not at the highest levels of travel.

Looking at her bio, it is possible that Moran was a rec player in soccer before becoming a HS star. So there’s the answer. You may be able to play on a top D1 program without playing elite soccer so long as you are a nationally recognized player in one or two other sports.

Not sure why someone would have posted the other two names.

My daughter plays ECNL and still plays basketball in the winter. For her, soccer is the priority, so it is important to be upfront and honest with the bball coach about the potential of missing practice here and there if there is a conflict. At that point, it's up to the coach to decide if that is acceptable. It can be a challenge, but it can be done.

Not sure what the concern is? The system filters talent and desire for top level college soccer, isn’t that what it should do? I get the cost thing, but there seems to be some other threads talking about the racket that is youth soccer - not sure it’s better than small local clubs. Neither ECNL nor DA prevent playing other sports. In fact, many of the players going to top programs play multiple sports.
