I think well-maintained, trimmed, styled, conditioned, HEALTHY longer hair looks good at any age.
No one is "hating" that kind of long hair.
Long, stringy, dry, unkempt, untended hair past the waist--coupled with a wrinkled face--just looks like witch hair. Really.

A few light layers, OP. If your hair is actually thin, a shorter style may be better.
Learn some cool, easy, modern braiding techniques. If I want my hair up, I often do a Heidi braid. Takes 5 minutes and looks great. I am pretty boho, though...that style may not work for more staid types.
