I think well-maintained, trimmed, styled, conditioned, HEALTHY longer hair looks good at any age.

No one is "hating" that kind of long hair.

Long, stringy, dry, unkempt, untended hair past the waist--coupled with a wrinkled face--just looks like witch hair. Really.

A few light layers, OP. If your hair is actually thin, a shorter style may be better.

Learn some cool, easy, modern braiding techniques. If I want my hair up, I often do a Heidi braid. Takes 5 minutes and looks great. I am pretty boho, though...that style may not work for more staid types.

NP. I'm not boho enough to wear Heidi braids, but I also have long, thick, wavy hair. Cutting it above my shoulders gives me the dreaded "mushroom cut" and I don't have the patience or time to fool around straightening it every morning (unfortunately I have a skin condition that means I need to wash it every day or at least rinse it in water). I usually just wear it in a messy bun :/

38 year old Asian with shiny long hair.

You need to use good shampoo (I use it’s a 10 or Kerastase when I feel like splurging). If you can afford it, get a whole house water conditioner -
Hard water wrecks hair. Or maybe try getting a shower filter.

Make sure you trim enough.

Shue Uemera nourishing oil while it’s a bit damp (a little goes a long way). I only apply to the ends.

I maybe blow dry my hair once a week, usually when we are going out to dinner or an event and I don’t feel like waiting for my hair to air dry.

Good diet, managing stress, getting enough sleep, and working out probably help as well.
