Hopefully they didn’t evacuate to say, Charleston SC. Latest forecast has the storm making landfall further north so. Still lots of uncertainty though.

Another Floridian here. We live south of Jax in Ponte Vedra. My in-laws are just outside of Orlando. No one around here is really all that spun up yet. Models are still all over the place like they always are this far out. Most Florida residents are prepared for hurricanes. We know the evacuation zones and routes well. Our homes are built to withstand strong winds. We always have hurricane supplies this time of year. I’ll make a Publix run for more water, snacks, and beer. We’ll ride it out unless it is forecast to hit us directly as a cat 4 or above. My in-laws are further inland. We’ll just head that way if it looks too bad. I hate filling sandbags. Hoping it doesn’t come to that this time.

They were stupid to open during hurricane season then. That’s their own fault.

My Florida relatives are preparing their homes, making sure they have propane for the grill and fuel in the car. In the next few days, they'll fill a few coolers with ice and fill the bathtubs with water. Then they wait. The storm is the imminent danger, but after that, you have to be able to get by for a week or more with no water or power. That's the hard part.

Riding it out is not at all the same thing as blowing it off. There's so much uncertainty. Any residents who say they are evacuating at this point are doing so prematurely. Where exactly are we all supposed to evacuate, to? Not everyone can just pile themselves and all their animals into a plane just in case. And getting on the road in the car can make things even more dangerous - you can run out of gas, not have a safe place to get to. There's a lot of uncertainty right now, as there often is, and sometimes the prudent choice is to stay home. That's what we are doing. Last time we evacuated at the last minute and almost ran out of gas on the highway trying to leave, with our four pets in the car with us.
+2. My relatives in Orlando have been through a number of these and hurricane strength typically has decreased somewhat by the time it gets to them, so they are getting prepared and staying put. My relatives in West Palm are a bit more unsure- they evacuated for one of the big ones (Maria or Irma?) but then of course their area didn’t get hit too bad and it took forever to get back with all of the traffic. Lot of uncertainty where the worst of it is going to hit. My understanding is that it’s not a particularly large hurricane (relatively speaking) so effects could vary widely depending where you are.
