I met my close friends through an affinity group. It was a combination of having a buddy thru the club and meeting their friends and meeting people that went to some of the same events put on by the group.

Ideally, I’ll send my kids to colleges that have mandatory on campus housing all 4 years — Notre Dame and Ivies? My alma mater didn’t and it makes things way too cliquey and doesn’t feel like traditional college to me.

All of my best friends were from the same general student government crowd. Still in close touch with a lot of them, 22 years later.

Yes - but from one particular club that involved lots of trips together and was pretty time intensive even outside the trips.

The groups most effective for making friends are those that meet pretty regularly -- sports teams, music groups, newspaper, etc. I was involved in a couple clubs at my school that only met once a month so you didn't really get to know people through the club unless you were part of the leadership that met a lot more often.

My daughter plays club soccer at a large private U and most of her BFFs are on the team. They practice 3x week and do 6 - 8 weekend tournaments, so you get to know everyone pretty well.

+1. Went to a big state school in the 1990s. Still close friends with my club sport teammates. We see each other almost every year, stay in touch via text and email, etc.
