whatsapp lets you text using cellular data or wifi, so kids who don't have cell data can still text with a group.
I use whatsapp to text with my friends and families who live in other countries. I don't know people who don't use whatsapp for that tbh. It is kind of standard.

We just got DS one of the cheaper Samsung phones for a little over $200. It works fine for what he wants. Games, Youtube, talk, text

That's a 5 year old phone. It's virtually obsolete the minute you take it out of the box, and you won't be able to run half the current apps. It's worth less than what you (didn't) spend on it.
Np: oh, please - I have an iPhone 6s and have no problem doing anything on it. I’ve had it for 2 years and no issue downloading/using/updating a myriad of apps.
Really? Because I have an old iPhone 6s that we kept when we upgraded two years ago and even with a new battery it will be down 50% in a mere 30 minute off the charger, apps constantly crash on it, it has nearly zero memory left and gets very hot as you use it. I kept it only because we have no home phone and my then 4th grader had just started staying home alone while I ran an errand and I wanted her to be able to call me or 911 in an emergency. But the phone is pretty useless unless constantly on the charger.
I have a 6S plus too and not have any of the issues you described. Battery works the same as always and have no issues with the ~100 apps and 1k photos on it.

For Android, look for phones on the Android One list. These phones will get two years of OS updates so you can be confident of security. There are Nokia phone on Android One that are <$200. Our kids have the Nokia 6.1 that was about $230. We use T-Mobile for all our phone service and it's pretty cheap.

I'm still using a 6s, and I can talk, text, email, use apps, podcasts, social media, everything I need to do. And I'm a pretty heavy user of everything except video. Can't think of a single app I needed that I haven't been able to run, and I'm up to date on the OS. Not sure how much longer that will be the case, but right now it's still fine.

We just did the BOGO option at Verizon. DD agreed to change her number so we then cancelled her old line 72 hours later without a problem. I got the new XR with more memory and she got a new XR with less memory.

It is soon going to be 5 models out of date. Holding onto an old one is fine; buying a new one (and even the "free" ones aren't free, because you're locking into a contract) is, in my opinion, pretty silly.

Just buy the Moto x4. Got mine on black Friday for under 200. Work way better than an year old phone from Apple or Samsung.

Because it works for groups that are a mix of iPhones and android and is “free” on WiFi for kids who do not have unlimited plans.
