Guns was a battle we gave up on!
We moved to guns in real life / real guns versus very fake guns - plastic brightly colored water guns, obvious nerf guns, finger and stick guns etc.
They know that real guns are only designed to kill. Fake guns do other things that are not about killing. They know that the only time a real looking gun should ever be touched is if you plan to kill a human or an animal.
In the end I felt it was safer for them to understand the difference between real and fake guns (with real looking fake guns being included in the real guns section). They know if they ever see someone with a gun (kid or adult) they are to get out of there as the only thing that person can do with that object is kill them. They know the only reason someone has a gun is to kill. We have talked about hunting and police and gangs and why they have guns and would want to kill. Anything with bullets is a death machine. I think I have them pretty terrified so that is good. Yet they can play with nerf guns or water guns and understand that the word gun means something totally different - it shoots something - and as long as what it shoots can hurt people, then it is okay.
