Thank you. OP here. Yes, my kids go to a very diverse charter school (not Stokes). I'm surprised that some posters overlooked my questions regarding the special needs program and jumped to the conclusion that I must be racist if I don't send my kids to our IB DCPS. Our IB DCPS has a terrible SN program, as many parents (most who are POC) warned me about. That's why it's not a good fit. There are lots of reasons a school might not be a good fit for a particular child. I also clearly stated that I'm not willing to fight for our IB DCPS.

Thanks to the poster who mentioned that if we go to Key then they could move us to any DCPS if they can't/won't meet DC's special needs. This is very helpful information.

If I was just looking for a whiter school then I would have jumped at the chance to go to Key without first trying to determine if it would be a better fit than our charter school.

Not sure what the bolded means, but here's what you said.

Our IB school isn't a good fit and we're not willing to send our kids there and hope we can fight to improve it.

Aren’t you all being a bit hypocritical yourselves? So it would be ok for OP to shun any other EOTP DCPS as long as it’s not a Deal feeder? I thought your UMC kids can succeed anywhere?

As far as I know, that claim was never made to the school and was never mentioned until this year.

To be fair, OP could have been talking about any Deal feeder not being a "good fit" but still supporting it. But it does seem odd to choose Key with so many unknowns.

If they do pick Key and it doesn't work out with extra supports or IEP, they've lost the charter and are back to IB anyway. Unless lightening strikes twice and they win the school lottery again in 2 years.

The problem with Key is that it's still in the DCPS system and its overall instability in budgets, facilities, leadership, etc.

If OP isn't worried about middle school and the child is happy where she is now, OK may not be that bad.

(I thought OP's IB was Hearst.)

I read the article (as well as threads here). I agree it's a he said she said situation. It's possible that Michael Eric Dyson (the granddad) misunderstood or misrepresented what transpired. But it's also possible that those present didn't hear the full extent of what was said, or heard it but denied it for some reason; it's unclear. However, the family apparently had a similar problem with their older son the prior year, and pulled him out. So the more recent event apparently didn't occur in isolation.

Except that the investigation showed that the grandfather was wrong and no racial slurs were used. Funny that Dr. Dyson chose not to tweet about that.
