I get to safety when I see Black teens in DC together. Did you see the girl who took the wallet?

I would look more at their demeanor and other contextual cues, and less at the color of their skin.

We are a well-educated AA family in NW DC, young kids full pay in private, etc. Will you run from our kids in a few years if they walk around with another black friend or two?

If they behave like this? Absolutely. And seeing videos like this, I will not take a chance to give Black teens a chance to attack me.

You are right that it is contextual. In other parts of the country, I have been careful of rough looking people from all races. In the context of DC it is mainly Blacks that are behaving in a criminal manner. This was a flash-mob-criminal activity, well orchestrated and they swarmed this person. I hope these people rot in hell.

What if they're only 13/14 as reported? I'm more angry at the parents that would let their young teens roam the streets at 1am. But I'm assuming the parents of these particular kids have their own issues.

It’s a rather adult sort of crime, or so it seemed to me. What’s your proposal? Juvie until 18 then cut them loose. Sounds rather unfair to the victim to me.

I am anti-NRA but frankly in this kind of lawlessness the only thing that could have saved this man would have been to be armed and shoot some of these criminals down.

I am not seeing race or even the age. These are criminals and this is how they are targeting people. They are going in a mob.

13 and 14 year olds out at 1am beating people up.

Find them, and punish.

Yes, if only all potential victims would just arm themselves, this world would be a much safer place.

NP. No need to be dramatic. But PP is right - one of these days, these punks are going to go after the wrong person. It would actually be refreshing if that happened because that might be the most effective deterrent.

Kids get involved in violence because they have no hope. Shooting a few of them is not going to deter jack shit. You need to show compassion. Violence begets more violence.
they get into crime because they have bad values or no values which is the natural result of destroying the family

Plenty of kids grow up in broken homes and don't attack random people on the street.

The ones who "can't be deterred" are the ones who most need to be shot.

I reserve my compassion for the victims of crime, not for the criminals, who deserve only swift and decisive justice.

I agree what happened to this guy is absolutely horrible--but just wanted to point out that for many of these kids, they are both victims and perpetrators. That's what happens in many rough neighborhoods around DC--lots of trauma in this population.

Yeah, I'm sure the guy who got the shit kicked out of him feels a lot of compassion for these hopeless kids.

Frankly, I'm tired of apologists like you. Ok, so these kids have no hope. Does that mean people shouldn't defend themselves when getting attacked? Does that excuse the kids' behavior? No. Something needs to be done about it because it's getting worse. Making excuses for these kids isn't doing them any favors and it doesn't make things safer for the rest of us.

Ok, that's a start. But the City Council and courts need to get tougher. Stricter laws need to be passed and the courts need to start handing down meaningful sentences. MPD can make all the arrests they want but juveniles basically get a slap on the wrist.
if anything they will go softer on crime. Arlington will have more crime as the new CA is soft on crime
