18:04 here - yes, at MCPS open houses you can see teachers teach. You contact the main office & tell them that you are moving from DC & trying to decide on schools. It varies by the school but often they have a volunteer parent who takes incoming/prospective parents on tours. They typically bring you to the door of a classroom or 2 & you see 5 mins or so of a class. Once you have an MCPS student enrolled, every year on Columbus Day MCPS wide there's an open house where you can go shadow your own kids but that's not open to prospective parents. The volunteer led tours are your only avenue from outside the system. GL, OP - parents are welcoming & in my experience don't sugar coat the system; they will tell you candidly what they like or don't like about a school. The only hitch is that you need to keep an eye out for what's relevant for your child, since so much of the 'fit' of a school depends on what your kid needs.

What unfortunate, too, is that we are searching prior to open house season. Maybe I can pump the breaks and get spun up to satisfy myself better.

If the schools offer tours during the school year, I could also start there.

I see a lot of folks on This forum suggest getting out and meeting and speaking to folks in the flesh to get a more fair perspective than is offered here on DCUM. Trying to find opportunities to do that, while currently living in Capitol Hill.
