It took an adjustment but carpet can work. We have never ever worn shoes upstairs. The carpets are still brand new looking 3 years on. I rarely even have to vacuum. They were brand new when we moved in.
Are you bald? We are a no shoe house too but my floor is covered with hair after just a few days.
You should really see somebody about all that hair loss. That’s not normal.

If you find carpets gross, you are probably dirty and I bet your hardwood floor would be gross as well.
Carpets are not for people that are dirty. If you are dirty, I understand why you would hate it.
You have to live clean, vacuum your carpet regularly and have it deep cleaned at least once a year.
That’s what I do and my 5 years old carpet still look brand new.
If you still coffee, beer, cranberry juice etc. on a surface guess what? You wipe it off, case closed. Too and if you have a carpet. It'll stain, potentially permanently, or you'll have to use a lot of effort to get it out. Got dirt, sand, dog poop accidentally on your shoes? Easy clean off a surface. On a carpet , nothing is worse than spot butt scooting across the floor trying to express their itchy anal glands or tracking in dog poop accidentally from your shoes. If you want some type matting on the floor, at least you can always choose to put a rug down onna hard wood floor. You can throw them away or at least take them out if they need heavy duty cleaning. Carpets are permanent dirt and stain magnets.

This is the point though, dirty hardwood just needs 5 minutes and a mop. You can’t “deep clean” carpet. But I fully get that people who never wear shoes in the bedroom and don’t have any pets could keep carpet pretty nice for 5 years or so. I need my house to suit my lifestyle which means rugs that can be washed and floors that can be mopped.
