Media reports mass shootings and other high profile gun deaths. For every one, there are hundreds+ that go unreported. On June 12th, in a gated and peaceful retirement community where I was renovating a unit, a resident was shot in the head as he opened his door, thinking it was a neighbor. His wife screaming for someone to call 911. He died on the scene. They haven't caught the gunman despite security footage.
OP, yes I do feel anxious when I hear sirens near my home, which is close to my son's HS. More so for you with a baby that doesn't have a phone at school. I can text my son any time. He texts me every day and always when there is a drill.
It is my top priority in 2020's vote, along with other parents and grandparents (party isn't a factor). First time voter students will make this a priority. They've also flipped their families from Republicans to dem or independent. I know 6 families who will vote for the candidate who makes gun control their top issue. My husband, a lifelong Republican, did not vote for Trump and will not vote Republican in the foreseeable future.

I was in my daughter’s preschool class to drop her off sand I heard loud arguing from the parking lot. Physically, my body’s flight-or-fight kicked in before I even realized that I thought there was a shooter trying to get past the security guard. I grabbed my daughter and started looking for the back exit. The teachers were scared too and had the same thought as I did (found out later). I cried when I told my husband what happened and what I thought.

I've been a gun owner for 30 years and I'm pretty sure my guns have never created murder. And I'm fully open to civil discourse about them.
Do I believe firearms should be regulated? Yes.
Do I believe firearms should be registered? Yes.
Do I believe the purchase of firearms should require prior safety training? Yes.
Do I believe firearms should be properly secured? Yes
Do I believe firearms should be extra secured around children? Yes.
Do I believe there are sick people in this world? Yes.
Do I believe that we need to do a better job of identifying mental illness? Very yes.
Do I believe people with the intent to murder can do so without a firearm? Yes.
Do I believe that 5 people can steal two cars and drive one into a gun store in Rockville to steal weapons? Sadly, yes.
Do I believe that guns create murder? No.
Do I believe that the current gun control laws are adequate? Close, but need some tweaking.
Do I believe that we need to vote in new legislators to create sweeping gun control change? No.
Do I believe that illegal guns are a problem in Montgomery County? Yes.
Do I believe that our focus should be on removing the illegal weapons from criminals? Yes.
Do I believe that possession of an illegal firearm should carry severe repercussions? Very yes.
So those are my views in a nutshell. For those promoting more gun control laws can you detail the laws you'd think would be necessary and how they would affect both legal law abiding gun owners and those who obtain them illegally with criminal intent. I see 'gun control' used quite a bit, but not many seem to talk about what they mean by it.

I respect gun ownership, but I draw the line when gun owners believe their right to own weapons trumps anybody else’s right to personal safety and freedom, and frankly I believe that’s where things have has gone in the last decade. I don’t think the second amendment is more important than any other amendment.
I support mandatory mental health screenings for gun owners.
I believe assault weapons should be banned. There is no reason for ordinary citizens to own these weapons. I believe service members should be required to return them upon leaving the service.
I believe there should be a heavy tax on gun ownership over a certain number. Personally i do not think that people should be able to stockpile weapons, but can’t imagine legislation passing that would restrict the number of weapons people could own, so this is a workaround.
No one should be able to have an unsecured or concealed weapon on their person unless they are licensed law-enforcement officer.
Until mental health screening and licensing and securing of weapons is universally enforced, I don’t believe there should be open carry in this country.

12:50 PP, I think that's a great start -- ensure that people who do have guns store them and ammunition properly, and that they are properly registered and trained. It goes without saying that people who are mentally ill, criminally minded, or otherwise potentially unstable (this includes young adults before their rational reasoning is fully mature, around age 25) should not be able to access guns. Sure, you can't stop bank robberies either, but banks do a whole to try to minimize them.
Also, (semi)automatic rifles have no place outside the military.

A local man had died in his septic tank. He had been working in his yard, and his son fell in the septic tank, and the dad ended up drowning in a heroic effort to save his son.
And now, whenever I've seen HAZMAT units, I do think of that man.
