Many DC Schools have contingents marching, as do churches, most council members, a lot of embassies, and quite a few corporations. The kids get a lot of candy, beads, and mini frisbees. There are some leather clad groups, but my kid sort of just takes that in stride. The mood is very friendly.

However, I just walked home from work and there was a drag queen dancing and stripping at the intersection with Q St, and doing it in a way that my 4 year old would definitely ask about.
I have been to parades in my home city (of 4 million people) and they have been fun, but I did see adults in gimp pleather suits being led on all fours and by leashes, and all kinds of other things that my son would definitely ask about. I think it's much too early for those conversations, so we won't be going. The family area sounds like fun, but I still think we'll give it a miss.
I do hope it goes without a hitch, though! It's a much needed vote of support for diversity and individual freedoms, and sadly as relevant as ever with the current administration and violent incidents around the world (the latest one on the London tube being particularly disturbing as the perpetrators were 15-18 years old).

"Mature content" is NOT family friendly, IMO.
Yeah, that’s a good reason to stay home and pull down the shades. There is way worse nudity on tv , along with gross violence that you won’t see at the parade.
The parade is a very happy event.
I mean, choosing not to take a 5 year to a parade that might have explicit sexual content is not the equivalent of staying home and pulling down the shades. Let them be little! . Same reason you DONT let 5 year olds watch shows with nudity and gross violence on tv? (!)
+1 I would never take my kids there.
Probably for the best. After all, the traffic coming in from Oakton could be tricky and you'll have to parallel park your giant SUV. Plus your kids might have a nice time and recognize that their parents are bigots. Best to avoid the whole situation.
Luckily, there is another parade happening later in the summer that will be perfect for the pp: https://www.latimes.com/opinion/enterthefray/la-ol-boston-straight-pride-parade-20190605-story.html
I think you missed the point. If you think someone is a bigot who is hesitant to take a child to a parade where there are exposed genitalia, or to let them watch shows with nudity, then while you’re very progressive, you’re also a very narrow-minded progressive.
