No, it's called micro-managing. I parent my kids. I parent them by giving them the tools to make decisions and think for themselves. I give them the space to make mistakes and learn from them. So when my girls are 20 and home from college, THEY will be able to occupy their free time, and won't need me to crowdsource ideas for them. At 13 a kid should be capable of picking out movies for themselves. And books. And music.


I have to agree! These kids are 13. Not 6. They can pick their own movies. Why would a 13 yo watch Willy Wonka (unless it was a replay for comfort as a childhood favorite).

My 12 yo has his own opinions on what to watch. Short of ensuring it’s not inappropriate anything else is fair game. If the movie appears to have too much sex or violence he self regulates and turns it off.

I like to check the reviews for movies or shows I’m not sure about on Common Sense Media. The reviews tend to be pretty reasonable and highlight things I care about. Most of the time, we’ll discuss a questionable reviews but will still let my 13 year old watch it.

Example, the Kissing Booth on Netflix. (I watched rather than read the review) The movie handles female sexuality and drinking horribly( in my opinion) but I let my 13 year watch it and we discussed. I try to say yes as much as I can but use questionable stuff as a discussion point. I know, I’m a micromanaging psycho Mom. I just think some of the messages in these movies need to be countered.

Disney live-action movies are great. Classic movies can be great, especially the comedies and musicals (Katherine Hepburn, Doris Day, Cary Grant, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Elvis, etc.)

I agree with the other poster to let your teenager pick her own movies.
