Subject: Parents who are home by 5-6pm from work - what do you do?
DH and I are both feds with multiple telework days. I have a fairly short commute and he only goes in one day/week.

This... DH adjusts his schedule so he can be home at a reasonable time. He's always done this. I wfh. Both in IT field.

This. I am in the office no later than 7, and often earlier. Generally home by 6:30, though not always. My commute is 15 minutes in the morning, and 25-30 in the evening.
OP, what time does your husband get into the office?
Op here - This morning dh left by 6:15 to get into the office by 6:45 and beat rush hour. On slow days he leaves around 7ish.
I'm not sure why you think 12 hour work days are the norm. OP, many many many people have jobs that do not involve 12 hour work days. I do not make $500k a year either. But I do get to see my kids at 4pm every day. I work 7:30am-3:30pm.
What does he do?
DH works from home and makes $230K plus stock.

I'm a fed who works till 5-5:30pm and has a 10 min commute home. DH works from home so has flexible hours and normally picks the kids up from school 3 block from our house between 5-5:30pm. DH probably does a little work after the kids go to bed 1 to 2 times a week. Our jobs, where we live and where are kids go to school were specifically chosen to allow us to have that type of evening.

DH is a senior engineer who works 7-5:30pm and gets home by 5:45. I'm a fed who works 7:30-5pm and gets home with the kids at 5:30pm.
We're still working 9-10 hour days. I'm not sure what you do that your dh isn't home to see the kids at the end of the day. My dream job would allow me to come home at 4pm and then log back on at 8pm after the kids are asleep and continue working (feds aren't allowed).

Dh works for a nonprofit. His hours are 8-4 and home by 4:30. I'm in sales and I can choose my own hours but I'm usually home by 6.

I'm a fed and I work from 8:00-4:30. I pick up my kid from aftercare and we are home by 5:30 or so, later if we stay to play on the playground. My husband is home by 5:45-6:00. He has an even shorter commute.

DH is a partner in a software development company. Home by 530 the days he goes into the office. Works from home 1-2 days a week. Had the option to work from home pretty much any day of the week of needed, so 99% of the time he's able to help out when DS is sick or has a day off

I don't understand why this is even a question when you answered your own question. He make a choice to work in a field that has long hours and makes a lot of money doing it. If you need help, he's not going to change so you need to hire help.

DH and I commute together, leave the house at 7:20, I get to work by 7:40, he drops DD off at daycare, then goes to work. I leave at 4:30 to go pick her up and walk to his office. We're back at home in the evening by 5:30. I work at a very family friendly large nonprofit, DH is an architect.

Fed lawyer. I work 8-4:30 and am home around 5:15-5:30. When I have more work to do I do it at night after kid is asleep.
