Top school for CS and Engineering

Known for given paultry aid to OOS kids which is why many don’t consider it.

As a state having financials issues with public universities. They raise tuition every time you blink.

U of I or Illinois is what it is called. No one calls it UIUC. That sounds very close to UIC which is University of Illinois Chicago which is a completely different school.

U of I -- cornfields great engineering worth full tuition for that

UIC - Chicago, used to be commuter school, heavy research now and building their OOS undergrad reputation.

When I moved to Virginia in the early 2000's, I tried to get some variation of U of Illinois on my license plate to signal my fandom.

I tried

ILLINI
ILL1NI
1LL1N1
etc, etc, etc, etc. All taken

I settled on Go UIUC, which was surprisingly not taken. For YEARS people asked me what on earth that meant. So the acronym is common knowledge for those who went there, but clearly not a common descriptor in Virginia.

Great school though.

I know people who attended there, both in CS and in Library/Information Science. Excellent in both realms. I would recognize both Illinois and UIUC names for it. You need a broader circle of friends.

I'm a CS person (PhD). UIUC has a fantastic reputation in computer science. Better than U MD, certainly better than U VA (which is a great school, but not so great in CS).

Most people that I know call it Urbana-Champaign, as in "I have offers from Urbana-Champaign and University of Washington, and I've decided to accept Urbana-Champaign."

Responding to another poster's comment about what to call another top CS school: I have friends who say Carnegie Mellon, but more who say CMU.

I have an engineering degree from U of I (as we called it back then), and when I was interviewing for jobs in the Hampton Roads area all my interviewers were impressed. If your kid goes there and does decently, he/she will get a great job before they graduate.

I don't think impressing laypersons is what UIUC is all about. It's about the work, and that's absolutely fine.

Anyone in E/CS who is supposed to know about it, already does. Gates has acknowledged that Microsoft hires more UIUC graduates than from any other university in the world. Intel hires more UIUC PhD grads than from any other university in the country. It's the national supercomputing center.

If you don't know about it, it will survive.

UiUC makes it sound like a directional school instead of the flagship Public U of Illinois
