Families certainly can choose to apply to both. TJ is open to applications from anywhere in the world, and people will often move from other states to be closer if their child is admitted.

Bethesda Magazine publishes admissions for the W schools and Blair, but where did you get the attendance stats?
I turned down a full ride plus stipend in the Gemstone program at UMD CP to go to MIT, where I got nothing but student loans. If I had to do it all over again, I probably pick UMD, although I never would have met my husband and had my wonderful kids that way. MIT wasn't worth it as an undergrad (terrible teaching), but I'd recommend it for grad school.

I'm not there now but when I was a student, we called it Jefferson.
I was admitted to class of '88 (when it was senior year only), and it was Thomas Jefferson then. Unless I've forgotten. Which is possible. But, regardless, it's movin on up! I actually have a kid at Blair magnet. I would say it's probably a little more competitive than TJ just because there are fewer seats. I'd love it if MoCo added more seats/programs. There are so many bright students. Some prep and enrich to make sure they get a space, but I'd like to see more spaces because I think there is a lot more talent/potential out there. Glad Wheaton is building a great reputation.

I am the parent of a Junior and we debate often over a Carnegie Mellon level school for over 70K vs UMD with a likely merit aid. We could cover CM though not easily and with no help for grad school. Would we? should we? We might not..even if he was lucky enough to be accepted.

Same boat. Getting ready for the ride next year. DC2 will get into UMD since DC1 did and DC2 is much stronger all around. Based on other kids we know who got BK, DC2 will be competitive for that. With UMD as a baseline, there's a fair amount of frivolous applications that are off the table - if the program is equivalent to UMD, UMD will win on cost even without BK, so don't waste the time and $ to apply. There are only two top schools right now that I'm willing to fork over $70k per year for (and we can easily afford it). Ivies and a couple other elites I'll have to be convinced that paying for undergrad is worth it. DC will go to grad school - I'd rather save money for then.

Don't dismiss these students as somehow not amazing. Many of them probably earned the Banneker Key scholarship and chose free school over other "elite" schools. I've known of several magnet kids from Blair, Poolesville, and RM who turned down an Ivy for free UMD.

Speaking as a Blair magnet parent I can tell you the kids in the program (and presumably TJ) are incredibly smart, even though they're probably not super-prodigies (which is not the point of the program).
I would say that in any college Honors program you probably could find some students who would have done great at Blair, and some who wouldn't.
I do think that a year in the Blair program is more demanding than a year in most college programs. I would say, depending on class choice, the classes are roughly comparable in rigor. However the expectations about quantity differ significantly. A full load at most colleges is about 5 classes. At Blair, a full load is 8 classes.

This just isn't true. That may be true of something like CAP at Blair, but not about the Blair magnet.
I had always understood it to be about 800 applicants for 100 spots. They let in about 135 to net 100 (some go to RMIB instead or their home school).
