Why is Lyft superior? They are both companies who use personal cars and hire drivers.

Am I the only one who would love a self-driving car service? I don't mind commuting as long as I get to sit and read or listen to music or even work. I would love to get picked up from my doorstep and just sit there for an hour with my novel or laptop.

Uber's path, who knows, but self driving cabs are already in Arizona since last year publicly via Waymo (Google). Lyft is partnering with them and will be offering rides there. When they hit the DMV is TBD but that is mainly due to more challenging weather (read: rain and snow) which multiple companies are working on.

Yes but in a few short years the skies will be filled with quadcopter “rides” with no drivers. I suspect Uber and others are well on their way to planning this.

Uber is a terrible business model long term. They lose money, long term with driverless cars they will have to buy cars. GM on other hand is connected to a Lyft. They can pump out endless supply of self driving cars for Lyft and cars like an inexpensive easy to fix Chevy makes sense for Lyft and the Delux version Escalades

Yes, cabs are for white people. I have been in busy urban areas and as an Asian guy, only about half as many cabs will stop for me as will stop for white people. And far more will stop for me than for my darker skinned friends. I have no love lost for cab drivers and their racial profiling.

Uber and Lyft are far friendlier to the minorities.

My old cab company I used a lot in 1990s had a NTN code. You were required to do a minimum of two NTNs per shift. Ask any cabbie what NTN stands for.

I’ve not been in a car recently who didn’t drive for both.

Uber and lyft will be around for the long term. Human uber drivers are a temporary phenomenon.

Totally agree. The crazy thing about Uber/Lyft is that 50% of my drivers have been white. Whereas ALL my taxi/cab drivers were Arab or South Asian, a smaller percentage where black.

Never had a problem with the white drivers. The most racist incidents I saw were with the Arab/South Asians.

OMG yes. So terrible. Refused to pick up my friends who weren't white. Drove me around in circles thinking I was a tourist. Hit on me endlessly. Had cars that reeked of cigarette smoke with seats missing. Tried to deny I gave them $20 and claimed I only gave them $10, relented when I said I'd call the police. Pretended their credit card machine didn't work to avoid the fees. Etc, etc.

Uber isn't perfect of course but DC taxis were that horrible 80% of the time.

But god this did remind me how just 10 years ago DC cabs were the WORST!!! They've gotten better, but only because of competition. So we all have Uber to thank for that.

Eventually drivers will realize they are not making any money, so maybe not.
