Why would a kid getting an athletic scholarship provide you any comfort? I don't think anyone things changes will diminish the quality of athletics, which will be far more important than academics for an athletic scholarship.
It also seems odd that you are putting much weight on one particular person's opinion, which you seem to value more because he went to an Ivy League school. Getting an overall sense of what your neighbors are thinking/planning might have some value, though.
For the record, I am not planning on going anywhere and think this is a lot of hyperventilating over almost nothing - at least at this point - but I don't understand your logic.
