Saturday Night Live did the "Hi, I'm Pat" skit for years.... haven't watched the show in a long time but my guess is they've dropped the Pat routine because it would be so politically incorrect now.
Pat was clearly non-binary.

When you read articles about gender fluidity or non-binarism, you will see an equal number of examples of biological males to females. But in the real world this just isn't the case. I discussed this with a friend who is a lesbian who has a theory about this, but I'm curious as to what others think the reason is.
Girls tend to me more fad-oriented and gullible than boys.
Wow. Way to completely insult girls in a very deep way AND make the male experience reductive. Well-done. My hat is off to this cutting and insightful comment.

Women's fashion changes every season. A man can put on a suit, or any clothes actually, that he bought 5 years ago and it will not look out of fashion.
Yup.
But if facts don't fit into your ideology of choice...

So it's easier to just signal "non-conform" than to want to conform but not feel you are able to measure up.

But why would so many of them want to look masculine?
Looking masculine in our society = short hair (often), no makeup, pants and non-form fitting clothes, comfortable shoes.
See what I mean? It’s a lot easier to look butch than it is to dress to impress men in a societally proscribed way. And when you get tired of dealing with men, you may no longer fell like shaving your legs and wearing heels.

I think that a lot of thinking you're male may be about wanting to experience male privilege on some level. What's sad is the idea that boys think you have to "be a girl" to experiment with hair, makeup, clothes, and women may think you have to 'be a boy' in order to experience being powerful, successful and respected. What needs to change isn't your gender but these ridiculous gender norms.
