Serious question: What is wrong with you people?

This is not a historic exhibit at the Smithsonian meant to perfectly and accurately capture the 1980s. Bob Mackie is not the creative director of OP going out to see a cheesy band. Tim Gunn is not actually going to evaluate this look.

FFS, wear the dress and some long necklaces and some lace gloves and a bow.

Do you people really, honestly take life this seriously?

That's what I was thinking. Accessorize it Madonna-style, and it's totally '80s. Maybe lose the bow.

Class of '88 PP:

- my big sister went to prom in 1983. She wore a long! Gunne Sax dress with her hair pulled back with a comb then baby's breath "spray" her hair. Asymmetry was big then, so I think she only pulled one side up w the comb. Very natural, plain look.

Huge change between early and late 80's prom dresses. I wore an off the shoulder, shiny dark pink gown with matching, dyed shoes. My dress was cocktail length with a very fashionable V waist. I wore my hair big and lots of eye makeup.

Typically, 80s themed parties are a showcase for the big, bold, exaggerated mid-to-late 80s; shoulder pads, geometric, modern shapes and patterns. Pastels of Miami Vice or jewel tones and primary colors in big graphics.

Most everything was oversized: sweaters, shirts, high waisted jeans, jackets.

Biggest fashion influences that I recall; MTV, Flashdance, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Madonna, New Wave music.

That dress does not scream 80's. I wouldn't see you and go, wow, she's hit the nail on the head for 80's.

Another class of '88.

Agree- that dress is not 80s at all. Class of ‘86.

Agree. Never saw anyone wearing a dress like that in the 80's. Class of '84.

same here

Just look up Joan Collins images - 1980s.

Or, for a younger look, find Brooke Shields.

I don't get the handcuffs, but whatever.

The above dress is 80s for adults. I was a teen and think I only wore Gunne Sax dresses for dances.

And peaches and cream Barbie was referencing the 50s!

you def could 80s it up with accessories - a big bow in your hair and some net gloves - but it's not an 80s dress

I had Peaches 'n' Cream Barbie, so I definitey get it! If you have fun with your hair and your accessories and your makeup, you'll just look fun and game for a good time. That's all that matters.

This. What Cyndi Lauper said.

Agreed.
