Dogs that will bite strangers essentially unprovoked should be put down, or kept out of public. Biting a child that tries to pet a dog in a public place counts for unprovoked.

It isn't unprovoked if someone touches or tries to touch the dog. The dog feels trapped and as if it is being attacked. Don't do that

Which is why the dog owner has a responsibility for not putting the dog in that position.

They didn't put down the dog because of the guy. The dog was put down because of an irresponsible owner. Thankfully it was an adult not a child. The dog and the guy deserved better.

BS. A person put their hand in front of a dog’s face which is a provocative move. If someone did that to me they would get pepper spray and a 911 call. All perfectly legal. Keep your hands to yourself. If you can’t control yourself I recommend a good therapist to work through your issues.

I’m not a dog person (we have one because of DH), but I am someone who has no patience with stupid people.

If someone bumped you, or touched you in public, and you bit them, you'd go to jail, not them.

I disagree. If the man hadn't tried to pet it than the dog wouldn't have bitten it. You don't pet a dog without asking!

And if there were no humans who hadn't been to kindergarten yet, that might be a reasonable position.

But since such humans do exist, the responsible thing is not to take a dog like OP's and the idiot above's dog into places where humans get get in their space without warning.

DP If this were the case than op wouldn't have to post anything because people would stay away from her dog. My dog loves kids but, we avoid other dogs because it is too stressful for her. I remember reading about a yellow vest or scarf that dogs wear to warn people to stay away. Maybe you could find something like that?

People should absolutely avoid going into an unfamiliar dog's personal space, for their own safety. But if you have a dog who lashes out, and you're dropping your guard in public to the point that people are getting close, you are incredibly irresponsible.

I have a super friendly dog and get annoyed when people get too close to and talk to my dog when I'm desperately trying to get him to exercise or poop or whatever I need, because he gets happy and distracted. But I just stay vigilant and guide him where I need to go.
