We give DS limited access to Instagram and TikTok. He’s not interested in Snapchat. I allow less time with TikTok since the quick clips and constant changes seem to make him moody and crazy after a while. It reminds me of when he was young and we had to limit video games because too long made him meltdown. I follow him on Instagram but periodically go through his phone and look at it from there. He doesn’t know when I’m going to do this and doesn’t seem to care so I don’t think he’s hiding a secret account. Yet.

I didn't let my kids have social media until HS. My HS DC decided to only have Instagram. DC report that kids are meaner on Snapchat and stupider on Tiktok, but TikTok also has the problem of sending data to China.

They remove it quickly but it can still be seen. Plus you can get “porny” stuff that doesn’t actually violate content guidelines but is wildly innapropriate for kids.

Just throwing this out there: I don’t let my kids have social media and I’m strict about what they watch on YouTube but I definitely do not think that’s going to protect them from seeing porn. Parents need to have a conversation with porn in addition to protecting them from it as much as they can. Kids are almost guaranteed to see porn no matter what parents do.

FYI I love TikTok so what I do is check it out every once in a while and download the videos I think the kids would enjoy and watch them with or text them to my kids. It’s a fun way to interact.

Snapchat has a “discover” feature, doesnt it?

We made our seventh grader get rid of snap chat. The bullying that went on through the posts were horrible and the obsession with streaks was too much. Lots of fighting after I said no but also noticed many other parents are making their kids delete Snapchat. If more parents actually read their kids devices, there would be less bullying. Today bullying is through the phone.

Your children are legally not supposed to be on any social media until age 13. And then, you really have to decide if their personality can handle it and also explain to them privacy and security concerns. In our home, it’s not worth the pain, hassle, time, or safety of our children to be on any of these until late high school.
