I lived in New Orleans and am not sure when PP visited or what buildings they saw, but there is a ton of new construction at Tulane including dorms, academic buildings, and common spaces, and a lot of renovations to the historic buildings. The idea that the campus is a shithole is laughable. It is absolutely gorgeous. The school puts a ton of money into modernizing and maintaining the facilities.

Yes +1000. Didn’t Tulane under go a major overhaul after Katrina- new missions statement, dropping some programs and really focusing on community service? Tulane will always have a party vibe because it’s in New Orleans-Laissez les bon temps rouler.

Tulane cut most of its engineering program which was a big shocker. Katrina cost Tulane hundreds of millions of dollars in damages. It’s concerning for future classes, I mean, it’s New Orleans. They’re going to flood and have hurricanes again.

Tulane is on some of the highest ground in the city and did not flood.

My DD goes to Tulane. No idea where the "shithole" exists. Yes, there are older buildings and dorms (like every other school that's been in existence for over 100 years), however, they are doing lots of renovations and building a new dorm and dining hall. 2 years ago when DD started they had just completed a total renovation of the food court in the very modern student center. Before that, they built a gorgeous new stadium.

In addition, my DD who was an A-/B student throughout high school with a rigorous course load and high ACT scores has not found this school to be a cake-walk at all. Of course, there are students who party hard, but she has met some really nice people who do not come from wealthy families and are super well grounded. As she likes to say, kids who want to party will do it no matter what school they go to.

One more thing about Tulane. Clearly, they are trying to up their game. I get that. However, they are selective with who they give merit scholarships to. If you get one, they give a good chunk of money that is clearly to entice kids on the upper end of the academic spectrum who may have passed them over for other schools. So yes, they do recruit widely, but we know from experience who they REALLY want by wooing them with large amounts of merit and who they will accept if they are willing to pay full freight. Ten years from now, the stats of students from Tulane will be even higher and that's their goal. The new guy who came in to be president from Penn (Dean of the law school) a few years ago is very ambitious and honestly, very impressive.
