A few people in this thread had mentioned having bad vibes before. Can you guys give me an example of what made you decide that particular family/parent was unsafe?

We are one of the yes live sleepover PPs-and you reminded me of another great thing about the bond these sleepovers offer: when my kids are now home from college THEIR friends (home from college too) ask when they can come to our house for pancakes as they have such fond memories of waking up to my DHs ‘choose your own fillings.’ We’re talking just Aunt Jemima mix but they all remember the fun of being kids and being welcomed into our home. I think that the nostalgia colors the memory of how good his cooking is but we love that our kids and their friends keep that connection going. (PS we were always/still are the grumpy rules family so its not like our house was a free for all, anything goes place.)

Why don't you let him host sleepovers, and that way you can get to know his friends a bit more? Then you can decide whether to let him sleep at theirs. Just curious: do you tell him the reason he can't is because you don't trust his judgment or ability to draw lines?

+1000! Sleepovers are great! Sooo much for the kids. I don't mind them at all! My DS (now 12) has been doing them since age 6 or so. We've never had any issues whatsoever. Granted, it's never been with strangers (duh). What has you guys so uptight?!

At 10yo "sleepovers" there is literally NO sleeping.

But I only allow kids to sleepover if I know and trust the parents.

We have done MANY sleepovers over the years, at our house and at other houses. There has been 1 -ONE- where this was the case. And it was a big sleepover bday party with like 12 girls there. My DD is almost 12. She likes her sleep. And, most parents will attempt to get the kids to sleep at a decent hour. At least, that has been our experience.

My mother hated sleepovers when I was a kid because we were always crabby and good for nothing the next day, and I hate sleepovers because the kids are always crabby and good for nothing the next day.

If the sleepovers are at my house, the kids go to bed.

If the sleepovers are at someone else's house, it only happens if there is NOTHING going on the next day.

If I'm uptight for not wanting to deal with kids who are crabby and good-for-nothing because they didn't get enough sleep at a sleepover, then I'm uptight. Shrug.

We allow sleepover with neighborhood friends and close family friends. Nothing else at this point. One of our neighbors doesn't allow sleepovers at all -- it's a bummer for the daughter but we get it.

I agree. My DH always made a huge brunch for everyone.

Some of my best childhood memories are from sleepovers. My kids loved sleepovers. You parents are too uptight.

I was wondering where you were. you do you. my kids have plenty of fun without having to stay up all night.

We do it rarely and with people we know.
