The cheapest flip phone was $10.00/month.

Sometimes it does not make sense to get the flip phone.

Verizon was clearing out new iphone 6 over the holidays for only $5.00/month. We had planned to replace the cracked screen and fixing one other thing on an old phone for our 7th graders, but the $5.00 deal was cheaper than the repairs, so a new phone it is.

At 6th grade, DS had an old iPhone. 9th grade, upgraded him to a new one. Mostly because it’s helpful to use family sharing and ‘find my iphone’ when trying to connect up, or to stalk him when he’s traveling solo or with a school group somewhere. The new one is especially useful because of the esim - he can keep his normal chip in place and use esim when we travel.

6th grade older LG model with parental controls. Everything off except phone and text. It stays in her backpack until she has to text us for after school updates. She texts/ calls classmates about assignments. She talks to home schooled BFF everyday.

Must keep room clean and use phone to check on grandparents to keep it.

7th grader now, got an old iPhone 5 in 6th grade then upgraded to old iPhone 6s Plus this year. We tried a flip phone at first in 5th grade but it was rarely used and eventually lost. Really wants upgrade to the now unused iphone7 after DH upgraded.

Most of classmates also have iPhone, a few new models but mostly older.

We got our first kid a phone at the start of middle school, and will do the same with #2. It'll be an iPhone because that's what the rest of us have, but it won't be new unless DH finds a *really* good deal online somewhere, which isn't that likely.

7th grade iphone se. has had an iphone since end of 4th grade. very active goes to school and sometimes is not home until 930 due to activities

6th grade girl, has a flip phone for when she's walking home, texting friends, etc. It's not that easy to text with it, which keeps it to a minimum most of the time.

She also has her dad's old iPhone that she uses primarily for music. No cell service, but it does work on wireless. She can use it to iMessage a few of her friends who have iPhones or iPads. A few game apps, but no social media or youtube.
