We gave to all the HS teachers DC had in the first semester - $25 target card each. . I was too busy to give any one else in the school. I did contribute to the teachers Christmas cookies day hosted by PTA. I did not think about the counselors or the front office this year for Christmas, but I can always give something later.

At the HS level we have always given a gift to teachers from whom we requested letters of recommendation. They put effort and personal time into writing these letters, it's the least we can do to thank them.

Probably too late for the OP, but just to chime in I give 15$ gift cards to just the teachers my kids tell me are engaged, caring, know my kid. This is for MS and HS. So my MS kid gave four away, and my HS kid could think of three she wanted to give to.

An aside- I like to give a gift to the HS/MS bus drivers around this time- the kids are so surly and sleepy I like to thank them specifically.

DP here, I think the poster who claim to tuck a 50 is too low-class to be giving even a cent to anyone. It is more probably that they are angry and jealous that others give to teachers and they want to cheapen that gift giving by insinuating that it is a bribe. Such selfish individuals are neither capable of giving gifts to teachers nor they produce and parent kids who are high achievers

Nothing during the year, it feels too much like currying favor, especially this year as they have to write letters of recommendations for my child.

I do thank the teachers who have gone above and beyond. At the end of the school year, when we owe each other nothing!

Hi, middle school teacher here, and I appreciate the gifts, but I also appreciate the positive sentiment from folks who can't give gifts or choose not to.

As anyone who works in the public sector knows, there are minimal-to-zero perks of the job. We pay for our own break-room coffee, our celebrations are potlucked, we have to use annual leave to go on fieldtrips to keep the costs low for kids, we don't have "work laptops" or "work phones" or anything close. And, many of my colleagues are talented enough in many venues that I sometimes wonder why they continue to stay in the realm of public education where their skills could be better-compensated and better respected elsewhere. So, if you have the financial means to give gifts, by all means please do, especially if there is a staff member at your school who you'd really like to "keep." Your gift (whether it's a $20 Amazon card or a handwritten note) could be the deciding factor when it comes time for resume season next year.
