I am 55 and I have very clear, exact memories of the times, when I was under 10, that my mom, dad, aunt, and grandfather beat the living sht out of me. Not something you ever forget.

All you can know or prove is based on actions; the action was over-the-top by today's standards, but was probably fairly consistent with approved discipline sanctioned by schools at the time.
I'm sorry this happened to you. I don't know how paddling ever lasted in schools as long as it did.
I think it may be helpful for you to talk to a therapist.
I am 58 and nothing remotely like this was done in schools where I grew up.
Fantastic for you. I am 39 and paddling was still alive and well when I was in elementary school in the 80s/early 90s.

It still happens. Paddling in school is still legal in 19 states.

I grew up in NY and we had nothing like this either, but I think it was more common in the south.
OP, I agree with the therapist idea. Maybe go find someone to talk it through with.

That you think it had sexual overtones says more about you then the incident.Anonymous wrote:During the my last four years of catholic grammar school I had Brothers and some of them were sadists. Rulers across the hand, pointers whipped across the back of your legs, lucite yard stick across the butt, face slaps. I don't know if there were sexual overtones but I wouldn't be surprised. The school eventually kicked them all out for physical abuse. I also had Brothers in HS who were not as sadistic but I was pretty sure there were sexual overtones. 40 something years later it became a scandal and some of the Brothers in my era were identified.
