Love being an oncology nurse, too! For the question about when a patient gets sick - I like that I can make a person feel better whether it's because I gave them a bucket to throw up in, a medication to make the nausea and vomiting go away or just in general be there for them when they are at their worst.

Teacher. I love, love, love my work. Don't get my wrong. I hate the meetings (99% are useless) and all the stupid mandates from lawmakers who know nothing about education or children, it seems. But the actual work with the kids? There is nothing better. Today, one of my lowest students began writing a book about his dad, 7 pages long. He's got the pattern down and the first letters of every word he intends to write, complete with matching illustrations. (kindergarten) It was super exciting.

I work at a health science center and do academic coaching for students in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, PT, nursing, etc. I love, love my job! It's stressful due to the high level of stress of the students, but they're so inspiring and challenge me to give my best every day.

I am an IT computer, network and security administrator for NASA. I have been with the agency for 26 years and intend to stay here until I retire. I also still know many people who were here when I arrived and are still working here. There is a reason that NASA has been the #1 most popular large agency to work for in the federal government for 6 years running and has won the category more than 50% of the time. I know many people who left for more money and then fought for years to get back to working here.

This is the best agency to work for in the federal government.

Your post makes me laugh. I think it's just not what people picture when they imagine working at the CIA. (People = me!)

I used to be a journalist and loved it, so much, even though I basically never got a real weekend or evening away from work. Loved it until I got a micromanaging new boss. I left that publication and went on contract somwehre else for a little less money; I was blissfully happy until the publication abruptly shut down. I then became a freelance journalist and was pretty happy except that I was working all hours of the day and night to make 2/3 of what I'd made on staff. I finally realized that however much I loved the work I couldn't take the instability anymore, and now I have a pretty dull job at a very good nonprofit. I don't love my job the same way I did as I was a journalist but I really appreciate that there's a regular paycheck and it's unlikely the whole staff will get laid off one day out of nowhere.

Hospital social worker. Interesting environment, great co-workers, never a dull moment!

Mental healer counselor with a small private practice. Pay isn’t great but it’s so fufilling and real. I love it!

Teach at a community college. Pay isn't great but I love what I do.

btw, the Atlantic recently ran a piece by a woman who attended her 30th harvard reunion; among her observations, teachers and health care providers really like their jobs -- lawyers and finance types not so much.

In-house lawyer working on complex transactions.

Less pay then biglaw but a lot less of the crap. Nights / weekends free absent emergencies and I can delegate to outside counsel as needed or do it myself if I want.

Deal permitting I try to keep the harder stuff and outsource the stupid crap. Not always possible but my work quality is generally on par with law firm partners, better than associates, without the crap (or huge pay package, admittedly).

The two business people I work with also live / appreciate me b/c they've dealt with shitty lawyers in the past.
