Please clarify. Did you mean you stayed in Jackson and walked around the very nice town? The national parks you mentioned are not really walkable.

I am guessing pp means Jackson. Many people confuse Jackson and Jackson Hole. Jackson is the town, which is very walkable. Jackson Hole is the valley and home to the ski resorts, which have shops and restaurants but there is more choice and interesting options imo in Jackson.

Also I wouldn't recommend staying in Jackson if you wanted to see Yellowstone. It is just so far away, not really great for day trips unless you want to spend 4-5 hours in the car every day just to get to the close parts of Yellowstone. Try to book a room in the park itself if you can.

We did Jellystone in Cherokee, NC with kids & dog several years back. It was great! We stayed in a cabin right on the river, went on hikes, tubing, etc. Each cabin comes with a firepit and there's a pool. We all had a great time!

If you're willing to rethink taking the dog: Consider New Mexico. We stayed in Santa Fe, rented a car, and spent a lot of time both outside the city (Bandelier and other national parks/monuments--gorgeous places, and imaginative kids will like them) and at museums and other sites in the city. Taos has its touristy side but is well worth a day trip if you tour the pueblo there. There is a lot of kid-friendly stuff to do if you look it up. It does involve a lot of day trip driving but it's so very different from the East Coast that it's fascinating to see.

That said, I'd love to go to Acadia sometime soon....Can't get more different than Acadia and Santa Fe....

So out of touch with reality. Sigh.

Among other reasons, did you miss the part about this being a road trip?
