Is this English?

40% of the people in this country are illiterate in English. Get used to it, the number and % will only be going up. DCUM should only exist in Spanish, it's so racist and Anne Frank and ethnic cleansing that it is not in Spanish as well.

Well - sort of. You can’t oppose virtually all enforcement of immigration laws - including deportation of people here illegally - and then say you are not for open borders. These two things do not go together.

I don't think Dems are againt enforcement of virtually all immigration laws. They don't have a problem with deporting people, but realize that there are constraints within our system (overcrowded jails in big metro areas where there are a lot of illegal immigrants; having people afraid of reporting violent crimes to local police for fear of deportation).

They also have sympathy for people who were brought here as children illegally, and if letting them find a path to citizenship = wanting open borders, then by that definition then some Rs are for open borders, too, since several prominent Rs support the Dream Act and amnesty.

OP here. Thanks, always interesting to hear different viewpoints. This issue is so contentious that it is difficult to have rational conversations with people. I think we absolutely need to change the quotas and make them more reasonable but fundamentally that still doesn't entitle people to break the law and come here illegally. It just seems so unfair to all the immigrants that followed the proper procedures. My cousin's wife waited for years to join her husband here. So many similar stories about people waiting patiently for years.

They tried to implement everify in Florida, but a rich R donor stopped it. The farm owners (many who vote R) were also opposed to everify.

Interesting about
-cruise line owner/execs (can’t remember that detail and don’t feel like going back)
-firmer nba players
-ag owners
-and, Magic Johnson

I think this shows that immigration issues cross party lines, especially when dealing with cheap foreign labor. Some people seem to think only Dems want cheap foreign labor, but that is not true. This crosses party lines.

Dems support unions and higher pay and benefits for the American workers. It's mostly the Rs who fight against these things that would help the middle class.

Reihan Salam’s Melting Pot or Civil War. And under the title: a son of immigrants makes the case against open borders.

Having read his articles, I believe he would have a very thorough and fair analysis to offer. I’m interested to see what he says, just haven’t gotten my hands on a copy yet while I have a pile of other books to read.

Again, most liberals are not for open borders.

Mmkay fine. It’s a book title. I just read the amazon sample, and I think you would jump to conclusions by tossing what he has to say aside. He isn’t 100% focused on (being against) open borders for the whole book.

I bet you’d have common ideas.

This made me think of how it used to be with digital music. Music companies wanted you to buy the whole album for $16, so they made it real tough to download music. When Apple and the music companies finally came up with a system where you could buy individual songs for $1 or $2, piracy dropped dramatically. You don't have to open the borders any more than you have to make music free. But you have to make the system reasonable.

Plenty of people already wait 15+ years to enter legally: the brothers and sisters who are sponsored by their US citizen siblings.

Spouses of green card holders have to wait THREE YEARS to join their husbands and wives. Yet someone can storm the border and insist on their right to stay right now.

False. Those who enter without inspection cannot get green cards in the United States. They have to go home, wait a penalty period of years, and apply from there. The more you know.....

So we should fix the three year wait for spouses of green card holders, yes?
