It’s only a matter of time when the odds catch up to you , the more times you ice skate without a helmet the greater are the odds you will eventually suffer some sort of head injury. Live and learn!
I know of 3 skating injuries this year across my friend group -all at public skate - all b/c of others who either fell or cut in front of them. 2 injuries were broken wrists and one lost a tooth. No - these examples were not helmet related but the fact is that putting it on your head is no big deal.

I learned how to skate at the age of 5, spent my life growing up in and around rinks, took some hard falls over the years, and never once used a helmet. I think the use of a helmet to skate is a bit of overkill personally, and seems to have become a trend over the past 10 or so year , along with the whole helicopter parenting thing; most people when they are learning to skate just end up on their rear ends or on their knees if they do fall.
I never once wore a helmet skiing growing up. Doesn't mean my teenagers don't wear them now.

Where are these public rinks requiring everyone to wear helmets? My oldest wore one for a beginning skating lesson when he was in preschool. He hasn’t since. My other child never wore one. I haven’t seen teens or adults wearing them for public skate unless they are hockey helmets in any of the public rinks.
It is required at our local rink outside of Boston for lessons.

Really? Plenty? I have four kids who play hockey and we are at the rink all the time for open skates and I have never seen this.
Yes, really. Plenty. Lots of people don't know how to skate.
No you haven't. Have been to all the local ice rinks public sessions and even school age kids are rarely wearing helmets for just basic skating. My child has taken group lessons from beginner on up and after the very first level and very young ages, helmets are not used.
NP. That can’t be right, unless you live in flyover country. I have been to an ice rink exactly once, two days ago, and around half the kids were wearing helmets. I can’t imagine it was just that day or ice rink (Cabin John).
Teens? I doubt it.
