I have a friend who got made at me when she learned we had paid off our mortgage on a rental property. The look on her face was close to fury. I think it's because she had just bought a condo for more than she should have paid and she's worried about that. I only told her because she kept asking so many questions about why we don't sell the house, isn't it costly to maintain, what if we go a month or two without a tenant... Finally I just said "We have wiggle room since we paid off the mortgage."

I thought you were actually ill and apparently you are only green with envy. There are billions of people worse off than you in the world. You may be better off than your friends in other ways: family, health, etc. These DCUM postings can make anyone feel "poor" and some of them might not even be true. Please feel well.

OP, you need to get a handle on your unreasonable envy. You shouldn't be measuring your life against others. You should be striving to achieve the best that you can for yourself and your family, but keeping score against your classmates from college is just pointless. Unless you think they beat you our or stole a job from you, you haven't had the same opportunities that they have.

I make a comfortable UMC income as a government contractor. I know several college friends that did far better than I did and I know several that didn't. I'm somewhere in the middle. I am very happy for my friends that have done well, especially the ones that have done very well. I've recently seen information that three of my friends who lived in the same dorm as me freshman year did very well. One got a PhD and ended up starting up a company that did extremely well. Unfortunately, he passed recently from cancer, but his family was left very well off from the corporation that he started and ran for almost 20 years. My roommate from sophomore year became the Director of Finance at a major Wall Street company. And another is now a senior department doctor at a major hospital. All of them make (made) beacoup bucks. I'm just sorry that I lost touch with the former two. I still see the third one occasionally. But I'm very happy for all of them.

You need to work on why you aren't happy for your friend's success and that you are jealous. It's not healthy.

+1 Don't let comparison be the thief of joy. And if you can get to that point, try to be happy they're doing well.

Oh, this just happened to me. I stayed home for a long time and am now working part time earning $x a my nonprofit job. My college friend also just went back to work and is making $4x/hour at her job. Ouch.
