I stop forcing my 5 yo girl. i do make her take her jacket, but its up to her whether or not she wears it. She usually changes her mind and puts it on on the way to school. That being said, I remember running hot all the time when I was younger.

At some point, yes. But that point for me is not where they are leaving the house in shorts and a sweatshirt to stand at the school bus stop in a surburban community and wait a few minutes for the school bus.

They aren't going to die of hypothermia under these conditions, or even get frostbite.

My 15 year old DID leave the house improperly dressed once last winter, and the bus was quite late. As he put it when he came home that evening, rather sheepishly, "I learned my lesson!"

Much better than me nagging him all the time about what he is wearing. I don't want to send a child off to college who hasn't learned to dress himself and needs Mommy to check him over and be sure he made the "best" choices.

I agree with OP. For everyone else making excuses, are you a parent or something else? At some point you have to stop being “friends” with your child and parent them.

My incredibly intelligent 13 year old is incredibly stupid about weather appropriate clothes. But he is smart enough for me to know that over time he won't be so incredibly stupid. I just roll my eyes and deal with it because I know he will grow up.

Spitballing here since my teen son is at his dad’s today, but I’m guessing he’s a.) underdressed IMO because b.) runs hot/teen snark/teen boys are just obstinate weirdos.

Early in elementary school ds refused to wear gloves - we were on our way to walk over to the sledding hill. I told him if he doesn't bring them and then gets cold, we are going home and not back to the hill that day. One sled run, his hands froze, he wanted to go home and get gloves. But nope, you chose to not bring them and I told you if we had to go home for them we were done for the day. He still hates gloves, but now knows his choices or bring them or freeze, and he still talks about that one time he didn't wear them.

Lesson learned the hard way, but quickly.

Tween/teen boys are not middle aged women. Their bodies are heaters and they simply do not get cold like we do.

My own kids have been known to wear shorts and a light jacket on sub zero days. Drives me nuts.

Young boys run hot. I see boys in shorts basically year round.

Geez, I have an 8 year old and I only fight those battles at a threshold of about 15 degrees colder than what I would think reasonable for my own wardrobe choices. No way am I telling my future middle schooler how to dress.
