My DC is a Freshman in Algebra 2. For sure, DC will do the full IB Diploma (DC plans to go to university outside the US). Math is not DC's strong suit or strong interest, and I see no need to overload DC with higher level math if that's not required. DC is solid in math (a B average in Algebra 2) but this is DC's lowest grade.
It seems like only possibility for Sophomore year is Pre-Calc. Would Standard Level IB Math be very repetitive after Pre-Calc?

Remedial is a relative term. For someone who has AP credit for BC, it may just mean less likely to hit the ground running in an engineering program, or too lazy to get back to work when the time comes. But, yes, everyone slips if they take time off, and colleges are making judgment calls.
