Mine is too, but the test changed this year to a non-essay. And the application essay (slightly). That's what all the musing is about. Last year's app was a little different.

My DD is in 9th grade magnet program. She applied to all the programs that she was eligible to apply in both STEM and Humanities as well as the countywide programs like RMIB and GE in Poolesville. She had to write an essay also in the admission test because some of the programs she was applying for wanted to see the writing ability.

Yes, I am curious about that. I would think RM & CAP would want to see writing from the test.
The timing doesn't add up for it to be only COGAT - COGAT is a timed test that usually takes less than 2 hours. The testing is supposed to last from 8 -11 a.m., which definitely does leave plenty of time for an essay portion of the exam, and would explain the need for pencils if COGAT is given electronically.
I don't know one way or the other, but, logically, it seems like there might be an additional essay component.
Agree, it's hard to believe those programs would do away with an essay test. That was always their line--we don't need the application for a writing sample, we'll get it directly from the student on the test.
