If other surrounding states would just raise their own tax rates in-kind, this wouldn't be an issue. But even without that, it's a very effective way to peacefully "cleanse" the state of racists and others who would move away because of higher contributions. We don't want these people here to begin with, so if this would incentivize them to leave, then that's even better.
I agree, many high tax contributors will NOT leave, because they understand the importance of what they contribute.
People will move in, yes. And as they make use of programs provided to them, they will become better educated, live a better quality of life, and earn more money, allowing them to contribute more in taxes.
This really isn't rocket science. It works just fine in Europe.
MD lost 1.7 billion when 31,000 left during O'Malley's millionaire tax from 2007 to 2010. So if they lost money, that proves the people who did come to MD didn't fill the gap. Also when he taxed smokes and alcohol, there was a shortfall in the projected revenue.
It stands to reason a small state which borders less expensive states will lose money when such short sighted taxes are raised.
You want high taxes? Move to California. And with all large amount of homeless in Frisco and LA on the streets, that should be a clue higher taxes is not the answer.

NP. I'm a Democrat who is voting for Hogan. I can see beyond party lines, and he's done a great job.
That said, the Democrats knew no candidate was going to unseat Hogan, so they did put up anyone who had a serious shot. They'll do that next time around. No use throwing away a good candidate/tons of money on a locked-in election.
If this is really the attitude it is absolute garbage and the reason the Democrats keep losing over and over again.

Jealous has even less financial acumen that O'Malley and could severely jeopardize the state's finances for decades to come. Under Jealous, the state is likely to see even more tax increases, even more wanton overspending, borrowing beyond our means and a further deterioration of the state's credit rating that could force us to pay a substantially higher amount in interest rates for decades. You could see an increase in taxes but a decrease in services because we're spending so much on paying down the deficit at a higher rating due to the dropping credit rating.
Voting for Jealous is voting for a financial disaster.

Then when it's a close race, my endorsement is taken more seriously since I have a bipartisan record

It's really a sad situation when someone thinks like this. We have so many poor and struggling already here in this country, citizens, legal immigrants and illegal immigrants. We need to devote our resources to those who are living in this country. We have homeless and jobless here in Maryland that need the help like a solid meal and a warm place to sleep or assistance in finding jobs. We have some resources, but not enough for all of our homeless and jobless. And Cardin wants us to spend tax payer money on foreigners in another country who's sole goal is to advance on the US border to violate our immigration laws and put more drain on our public resources. While I have a lot of sympathy for the struggles that are driving the caravan to seek out somewhere better than where they left, their welfare is NOT our problem. Our impoverished residents in this country and in this state should be our priority, not Central American refugees trying to enter our country illegally.
Maybe the US shouldn't have gone in and destabilized their governments decades ago in order to make it easier for US business interests while creating a power vacuum, and maybe we shouldn't be fighting a senseless drug war that only helps cartels? Maybe we should have thought of that? I know the Governor's race is about Maryland, not US foreign policy, but Senator Cardin is our voice in the federal government. We have to sleep in the bed we make.
How bout this, let's take all the migrants in that caravan and divvy them up amongst all the states. Further, for those who end up in MD, lets make sure that instead of putting them in schools in SS and Germantown, that they end up in Bethesda and Potomac schools for a change. Does that sound cool? Because it's not fair that only certain schools have been taking on the burden of educating these children. I had nothing to do with the decisions that the US govt made years ago so no, I don't feel inclined as a citizen to pay for whatever mistakes they've made.
