Oh, and yes they live well beyond their means. He runs his own business (pulls in about 80K a year profit) and she makes about 60K. He expenses EVERYTHING to the business. Vacations, cars, phones, food, etc. Last year his accountant warned him because he verging on the point of getting in trouble if ever audited.

To answer you question, OP, when I drive I just need to get from Here to There. DH needs a few more options but we are far from having a fancy car. We choose not to spend our money cars, which are nothing more than a money pit.

I have a slightly above base model of a Subaru Crosstrek. I need a car for errands, work, and the occasional trip where we don't take DH's car. And I have to drive no matter the weather to work so need a good winter car (I live in NE).

I don't car about cars. Nothing you describe is something that is worth the money to me. I grew up with luxury cars. My first car was a luxury car. DH drives a mid level luxury car. I just don't care. I wouldn't want to be friends with people like you who are going to judge me because of a car.

I care about other things like vacation. So the money I don't put to a high end car is used to go on high end vacations. Or clothes/bags. Or home improvements.

Because it just doesn’t matter to me. The feel of the seat on my ass or the wheel on my hands doesn’t affect my mood or attitude one bit. It just isn’t worth it for me...obviously it is for you. I’m sure I spend money on things that are worth it to me that you personally think are stupid or wasteful.

Which is not to say he didn't drive a nice car. He just knew how to be smart (and chill) about it.

The issue is technology is advancing so rapidly, that a new car has much better safety technology than the same model of that car from 3 years earlier. We just upgraded our family care from a 2012 to 2018 -- same make and model, and the 2018 actually steers to keep you in the lane, has 8 cameras including an overhead view, controls throttle and braking in stop and go traffic, and has blind-spot and rear traffic detection. All our car from 6 years earlier had was a back-up camera in black and white.

I've driven fancy new cars, but I'm happy with my cheap car. It has all the safety features I need and after that who cares? It's all the same to me. Some people don't care about that stuff, but I can see how you might care about comfort and features. It's the status thing I don't get. Do you really drive past other fancy cars and think, wow that person must be cool. And look at cheap cars and think poorly of their owners?
