Subject: What are W schools?
Look at the deciles of the whole school. The top two if not three quartiles are quite strong and consistent at W schools.

Where did you get the idea they have the best performing student bodies? That distinction is typically a competition among Blair, Poolesville, and WJ (on some metrics).

I commend the parents who live in places like the townhouses & condos around Montgomery Mall, who will sacrifice living in a much larger home in a not-so-great school system, just to be able to send their kids to a better school.
While I can't send my kids to a W, I happen to agree with the poster who said that the majority of the "we hate W schools" comments come from parents who can't afford to send their children there & are envious/jealous.
I live in dss and never even think about w kids. Have no opinion either way.

Wooten is a W school now? From my impression, they are Whitman, Churchill, WJ, and B-CC
^^Wootton isn't that wealthy or white so how is it a W? also way too far up 270 to be considered elite. definitely placed in the middle class of MoCo.
wtf? look at the income bands. Average HHI for Wootton is the same or close as any of the other W's. If you're going to be nasty, at least be factually accurate.

Oh yeah, up here in QO-land, we don't care about our kids' educations. You're totally right about that. Our collective goal is for our kids to barely graduate high school.
LOL I'm a W parent and no one here looks down on QO, just too far out for DH and I to want to live there. If you don't mind the longer commute to DC then its fine. QO is like a border-line W, the people on here referring badly to non-Ws are talking about Gaithersburg, Watkins Mill, Seneca Valley, Northwest, Wheaton, etc. not QO or Poolesville.
I know it's hard to believe, but not everyone in this area works in the District. Shocking, I know.

They're a thing because people who spend more money to live in places like Potomac and Bethesda like to think the schools there are better, so they can justify in their minds why they paid more for their houses.
Of course we all know the scores are 100% correlated with SES and that there are many excellent schools in other parts of the county (aka Poolesville, QO, etc).
