The parents are not blameless here (they were “right” but their kid was nearly killed) but how did the dad stay on his bike and not hop off and bang on the car? I think I would have to have been retstained in screaming anger.

Yes it happens a lot. And then a lot of times the drivers who are stopped are part of the problem, because they will frantically wave you across like "I AM STOPPED GO AHEAD" when I'm looking for the other lane to ALSO be stopped before we all get killed. I cross a major road with my kids a lot with a crosswalk that has a blinking red light after you push the walk button. People still sometimes almost mow us down. I watch like a hawk when crossing. My kids are still little, but yes I fear the day we are biking and one doesn't listen to my "STOP THERE AND WAIT FOR ME!". That child in the video was inches from being killed. It took my breath away.

True. And, the video starts several seconds before the car arrives at the crosswalk, so you can tell that there is a fairly decent stretch of straight road approaching the crosswalk. That SUV driver had plenty of time see the family ahead, but the parents also had plenty of time to see the SUV approaching and to make sure it was actually going to stop.

Which they did, and that's the only reason the child isn't dead and the driver isn't facing a vehicular manslaughter charge.

If I were to bet on this, I'd wager the driver of the SUV was looking at their phone.

When I'm driving and see people ready to cross a crosswalk, I just stop even if they aren't in the crosswalk yet. Every once in a while someone does that for me when I'm walking and always appreciate it and thank them.

I hope the parents see this video—or better yet, this thread— so they can appreciate how this played out and take precautions in the future. I can imagine that it happened so fast and was so scary, that fear and rage might make a person overlook their own contributing actions.

I don’t bike on the street because I think it is dangerous but I am a frequent pedestrian.

I see this a lot when I am walking. You have to be a smart biker and pedestrian and not assume the cars see you and will stop. You have to confirm that they see you and are stopping before you go. Maybe the driver of the car is technically in the wrong for not stopping at a crosswalk but it’s better for you not to be injured!!

When walking - even when I have the right of way with a walk sign, I often see cars want to turn right on red. They look at the cars coming to their left but you need to confirm that they also see you crossing to their right before crossing.

Same if you’re walking / running on a street and you want to go across a street to the other side. Make sure if a car could turn left or right onto that street that they see you’re crossing and that you don’t both end up in the intersection at the same time.

Those are the two i see most frequently. I will think if I can think of any others.

Mary Cheh tried to pass legislation a few years ago to require cars to stop in multi-lane roads when another car is stopped. This was in response, I believe, to pedestrians getting hit in situations like the video OP posted.

That being said, I think that the dad who crossed should have made sure that all cars on his side of the road stopped for his kid on the bike once he had safely crossed the road. He did not look back. The mom yelled STOP when she saw that the car was possibly going to hit her kid.

The car with the dash cam could have *honked.*

Finally, hawk lights are ideal for situations like this.

The SUV blew clear through the cross walk and the only reason it didn't hit the girl was because mom saw the car coming and yelled for her to stop, which she did just before riding into the SUV's path. Had mom not yelled, the SUV would have flattened the girl.

That PP is kind of an idiot. Yes small kid may be hard to see. Stopped car with flashers on? Easy to see.

Since PP thinks it stopped in time, maybe they should not be driving either.

The driver clearly was not paying attention. Although the car stopped in the left lane might have blocked his/her view, s/he should have been attentive to the fact the the other cars were stopped in front of a crosswalk.
