Please get a survey...assuming if you have not done that. In Va for example, VDOT owns the right of way from edge of the road to your property line. There are also utility easements and depending on
when your plat was sub divided and/or recorded, it is hard to tell. I know...I know....but best to get a survey.
That the state has a right of way, ot that a utility easement exists, does not mean that the general public is permitted to go on the land whenever they please. Entirely different things.

What about just putting in a reasonably attractive edging that would be hard for cars to drive over?

The barrier wouldn't have to be more than 6-8" high to keep cars from trying to drive over it.

My LoCo neighbor laid razor wire last week on his grass to keep kids and pets off his grass. It was an entertaining flurry of activity there with cops involved.
