Frankly I think OP sounds immature and ridiculous

I guess I missed this in the Marriage Rulebook.

The really big surprise was that a friend I invited brought an ex BF of mine as her date to my surprise and the surprise of my husband. Awkward! My husband was very nice to him but did tell him to eat his heart out! Overall it was a hell of a party!
"Eat your heart out"??? People really say that? You and your husband both sound unsufferable. I'm sure your ex came as your friend's dat because he was way past being over you. You and DH just embarrassed yourselves.

Isn't it the person whose birthday it is the one who should decide how to spend their day? Notwithstanding the fact that this wasn't even the husband's birthday - it was the night before. Now husband's have to be mindful that their wife might want to "spend the last few moments of the prior year" with them?
PPs are suggesting "you know your spouse wants to spend this special magical exceptional day with you". WHAT? So now because I'm married, my birthday really belongs to my spouse because I should always spend it with them. Oh and also if it's their birthday, I should know that I do something special for them too.
It's entirely too much. Birthdays are for children and for adults it should be left to the one having their "special" day to do what they want.

OP sounds the sounds the same and I shudder to think what she expects on her birthday.
