They wanted to honor a person, but rather than putting his name on it, they chose a name that's symbolic of one of his great achievements and also can be tied to an educational theme. I certainly don't expect anything new to come out about John Glenn to create a controversy, but even if it did, the name is still okay because it's tied to things that are bigger than just him rather than to him personally.
