Coaching and players, among other factors, dictate the formation, not the converse. Culture and coaching dictate style and strategy. Let's wait and see what happens. Formation can change on a game to game basis, so I dont see how pointing that out is relevant.


When you line up with 5 defenders and 3 defensive midfielders in a friendly, it says a lot about your style of play and that you are playing for result (i.e., not to be embarrassed in a friendly game). It shows where the coaching priorities are.

US women U-20 did not make it out of the group phase of this years WC, but they qualified, contrary to what you stated. Just one goal against Spain would have put them through to the knockout round in the WC. That qualifies as barely missing out on the knockout.
