I am not afraid to dress for my age. As I get older, I don't mind spending more for quality, comfort and style.

My phases of; finding myself, finding a man, having babies are over. It's ridiculous to dress like one. I do not need to advertise like a flower to a bee.

What does dressing one's age have to do with having babies and finding a man? I may be over 45, but I care about how I look as much as I did when I was 25. I'm also the mom of 16 and 19 year old boys. That doesn't mean I stopped caring.

I imagine you in your skinny jeans, piece-y, beachy highlighted hair that you pay dearly for (and it’s just starting to look a little too dried out lately), looking down your snout at people. Neither the Chico’s style nor the Talbots one really speak me, but I can acknowledge that there’s room for more than one style on the planet. I can also acknowledge the ageism and classism that makes these two brands come in for so much scorn here.

Yes--you are missing the fact that these are on sale and they have already sold out of other sizes in your choice. Sometimes, they will have a blouse I like for a great price--but it is only available in XS.

Their sales are terrific, though. Especially, if you can find what you like on final clearance.

I’m 40 and my mom was always a size 12/14 and was a teacher. I think of Talbots, Chico’s, J Jill, and a lot of Eileen Fisher as “mom clothes” or “teacher clothes” which is a different aesthetic than I strive for in a business / office job.

I have several lawyer friends who swear that Talbots has some amazing diamonds to be found if you weed through. For me, it’s not about shunning, it’s that my time to shop and put together looks is so limited that I can’t bother with stores where I like 5-10% of their stock.

I'm a lawyer and I still need to wear suits to court. Reasonable options are very hard to find. There just aren't that many stores offering classic looking suits in decent fabrics. Not everyone can wear shiny suits, or super slim cut pants, or the trendy cropped suit pant, or (heaven help me) the double breasted suit coat I'm supposed to believe is back in style. Also, not everyone can afford to spend $750-1000 per suit. So, that basically leaves Ann Taylor or Talbots for decent quality suits that won't make you stand out in a bad way. Does most of the clothing at Talbots make me cringe? Yes, but I don't need to buy it. I can get work clothes and that's great.

I'm 40. I have nothing against Talbot's, but Chico's is what my mom and MIL wear and: a) it's not my style and b) I don't want to dress like either of them. I also dislike their sizing system - I don't want to figure out if I wear a 1 or a 2.5 or whatever.
