I have never worked at a university that did not have a major cockroach infestation. It's common.

I would try to move. Roaches are a health hazard and constantly applying insecticides is also a health hazard. The school best be nice about it because it really is inexcusable....they have all summer to prepare those dorms.


Many schools use the dorms all summer.

OP here. I think bashing a college based on one single experience is kind of awful. If it happened again, or if we had not had a great experience up until now and there were multiple issues, I might think differently.

If you google "cockroaches in dorms", you'll see TONS of colleges (in cities and less urban areas) have dealt with this dorm bug issue (roaches and bedbugs and even rats and mice).
I think that in our era of social media, we are quick to bash a company for a single error and we don't even realize how damaging it is. Companies make mistakes just like people do, and bashing them online is harsh if they try to remedy their mistake. The internet is a powerful way to deal with them if they don't try to remedy their mistake, but I think doing it up front is wrong.

Just my personal opinion.

My DS spent the summer in a Boston dorm. Also had roaches..big urban building so I guess I was not shocked.

Send him glue trips via amazon. Tell him to put them out and see where things are.

If he sees anything - he needs to use this as an opportunity to learn how to advocate for himself.

OP here. Part of my struggle is that we aren't paying for room and board. He's on an athletic and an academic scholarship...so I can't do the whole "I am paying for room and board" thing, really...

So far, one more night has passed and zero roaches. Hopefully it stays that way!

I am a little annoyed to find out that although we drove down there to talk to the residency office, another set of roommates (who we KNOW complained after us, whose sons are the same year as mine), was moved to a much, much better dorm. I can only guess one of the moms was a little less "nice" about it than I was. Oh well. My kid seems to be over it and moved on, so I will too. (Still, I cannot get the images out of my head and the first time he comes home for the weekend I swear I am going to treat him like he's coming home from a toxic waste dump. God, I hate bugs more than ANYTHING. Especially scurrying bugs...I dont care about spiders or bugs like that...)
